The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Good Design>>>
Design feature Summary
Text The page background does not interrupt the text, the text is big enough to read, but not too big, the hierarchy of information is perfectly clear and the columns of the text are narrower than in a book to make reading easier on the screen.
Navigation Navigation buttons and bars are easy to understand and use and the navigation is consistent throughout web site. Navigation buttons and bars provide the visitor with a clue as to where they are and what page of the site they are currently on. Frames are not obtrusive and a larger site has an index or site map.
Links Link colors coordinate with page colors and are underlined so they are instantly clear to the visitor.
Graphics Buttons are not big and dorky and every graphic has an alt label and graphic link has a matching text link. Graphics and backgrounds use browser-safe colors and animated graphics turn off by themselves.
General Design Pages download quickly and the first page and home page fit into 800 x 600 pixel space. All of the other pages have the immediate visual impact within 800 x 600 pixels. The pages also have a good use of graphic elements (photos, subheads, pull quotes) to break up large areas of text. Every web page in the site looks like it belongs to the same site; there are repetitive elements that carry throughout the pages.

Bad Design>>>
Design feature Summary
Text Text that is too small to read or crowded against the left edge, text that is stretched all the way across the page, text that is in all caps, bold or italicized and underlined text that is not a link to anything.
Navigation Unclear navigation or an over complex navigation with complicated frames. Links that don’t go back to where they came from and titles that don't explain what the page is about.
Links Links that are not clear about where they are going to take you or links in copy that distract the readers. Text links that are not underlined so you don't know that they are links and dead links that don't work anymore.
Graphics Large graphic files that take forever and a day to load, meaningless or useless graphics that take up space. Thumbnail images that are too large, graphics with no alt labels, missing graphics and graphics that don't fit on the screen.
General Design Entry page or home page that does not fit within the standard browser window, frames that make you scroll sideways or pages with out a focal point on the page. Too many focal points on the page, cluttered pages without enough alignment of the elements. A lack of contrast in color, text, to create hierarchy of information, etc. Pages that look okay in one browser but not in another.

Example of Poorly Designed Site >>>
Design feature Support your choices with specific features of the site.
URL of site #1: http://www.5safepoints.com/
Text Site #1: Oh my! Almost all of the text on this website is either in a different font, color, size or all of the above. The copy is too close and jumbled and overall just looks like a huge mess.
Navigation Site #1: There is no real navigation or navigation bar on this site. There is about 50+ links however but no real way to work around the website. There is also about 10 seconds of blank space when you stroll down the website homepage. Not sure if that is a mistake or not.
Links Site #1: There are many links on this homepage and they are either in red or blue colored text with of course the link underline at the bottom. There are also links to other traffic schools in the area and an image of city seal is used as the link for those.
Graphics Site #1: Ugh the graphics are horrible, a thumbs up is used along with a older student looking to be sitting in a classroom. Overall I know what they were trying to accomplish with these graphics but they do not work at all and make the page seem even more cluttered than it already is.
General Design Site #1: Overall the general design of this site seems very elementary and seemed to take little to no time at all to create. I know that it is probably a budget friendly website and design but if you want to get more business you need a better deigned website.

Examples of Well Designed Sites >>>
Design feature Support your choices with specific features of the site.
URL of site #1: http://oypro.com/
URL of site #2: http://www.scottmansfield.com/
Text Site #1: The text on the homepage is all the same and very clear, which makes it easy to read and follow. Also, the coloring of the text is all the same and is not plain black which makes it visually appealing for the viewer.
Site #2: I randomly found this website because I did not ad the AIS to the end of our instructor’s website. This site is very clean with simple text in black that changes to red when you scroll over it.
Navigation Site #1: Each section of the website has a drop down menu so you are able to navigate very easily. This also makes it easy to jump from page to page to find exactly what you are looking for. The Home page button is always on the top left hand corner of the screen and the site also features a sitemap.
Site #2: Navigation is very simple from the home page to his portfolio of photos, to his contact information and prints. It is very simple and clear.
Links Site #1: All of the links have a word box next to them showing that they are a link to more of the information or the link is underlined so that the viewer is able to tell that the subject is linked to other bits of information.
Site #2: For the links on this website all I saw was to follow the artist on Facebook and Twitter. Both links were very visible on the bottom right hand corner of the page and the text also changed to red when it was scrolled over.
Graphics Site #1: The graphics on all pages of the website are all done in the color scheme of green, blue and yellow. This makes the site flow very well from page to page and makes it overall visually appealing to look at.
Site #2: All of the graphics are of the artists photos and they are all well captured, the perfect size and are not pixilated at all. All of the images load in about 15-30 seconds which is perfect.
General Design Site #1: Overall the general design of this website is very organized, detailed and fits well into the overall definition of a “good website”.
Site #2: Overall this website is very clean, simple and very easy to use. This is the type of website that I want to create for my professional site. I think that more websites need to be as simple and clean as this one.

January 13, 2010 First day of class

It's 6:45 on a rainy Wednesday night. I have been working since 8am and have just started my e-portfolio class. At first I thought that this class would be interesting and possibly fun...boy was I wrong. I consider myself somewhat technologically challenged, so 11 weeks of putting together a working professional website should be a great adventure...maybe. Follow me for the next 11 weeks and see just how stressed an individual can become. I may ask for help, so please...help me!
